3TC continues to meet community commitments throughout the project corridor by reducing noise and vibration effects from construction activities, specifically at the Covert Avenue and Urban Avenue grade crossing eliminations. Vibration monitoring boxes have been strategically placed near work sites to observe vibration levels at neighboring residences, and 3TC is installing a noise shroud at the Covert Avenue grade crossing elimination site to reduce noise impacts from pile driving necessary for ground excavation. These noise and vibration control techniques exemplify 3TC’s commitments to minimizing disruptions to communities adjacent to the LIRR Expansion Project.
The Covert Avenue grade crossing is being eliminated and reconstructed to provide a two-lane grade-separated underpass with a pedestrian sidewalk on the east side of the underpass; the Urban Avenue grade crossing is being reconstructed to accommodate a two-way grade separated underpass with a pedestrian sidewalk on the west side (Railroad Avenue will bridge over the underpass and remain connected). These reconstructed grade crossings will enhance safety and reduce noise in the Village of New Hyde Park and in the Town of North Hempstead.
