On February 21, 2019 the LIRR Expansion Project team delivered a project update to the Floral Park Centre Civic Association and discussed ongoing construction activities occurring in and around the village. The presentation included current progress on South Tyson Avenue Bridge, coordination with local schools, and traffic detour plans for the Covert Avenue grade crossing elimination. The team also relayed information about the project’s cutting-edge STEM Competition for schools in the project corridor. The Floral Park Centre Civic Association represents an unincorporated area within the Town of North Hempstead.

The LIRR Expansion Project from Floral Park to Hicksville will bring many benefits to Long Island, including the addition of nearly 10 miles of new third track that will increase capacity and allow for two-directional service.  The project will also eliminate seven street-level grade crossings, improving safety and reducing traffic, and increase bridge clearances to avoid delays resulting from truck strikes.

The Covert Avenue grade crossing in the Village of New Hyde Park is being eliminated and reconstructed to provide a two-lane grade-separated underpass with a pedestrian sidewalk on the east side of the underpass. This reconstructed grade crossing has been designed in conjunction with the Village of New Hyde Park and will enhance safety and provide for a quieter and more livable community along the railroad.
