Last of New Hyde Park Grade Crossings Eliminated

Automobiles and trains have been sharing roadway space in New Hyde Park since the dawn of mass motoring. That will come to an end on Saturday, October 24th as MTA Construction & Development eliminates the last of three crossings on the Main Line at S. 12th Street in New Hyde Park.

The eliminations will improve safety and the quality of life in the neighborhoods along the corridor. Warning bells at crossing gates will be removed and trains traversing the intersection will no longer be required to sound their horns. Traffic backups also will be minimized along with the exhaust spewed by idling vehicle waiting at crossing gates in the down position, which can be 35 percent of the time or more during rush hour. Most importantly, train-vehicle collisions at those locations become a thing of the past.

The closure is part of MTA C&D’s LIRR Expansion program that will eliminate a total of eight grade crossings in the 10-mile long corridor between Floral Park and Hicksville. S. 12th Street is the fifth grade crossing to be closed.

Customers will need to utilize alternate crossings at either New Hyde Park Road or Covert Avenue, until a pedestrian underpass is completed in the spring. Vehicular traffic also will need to follow detours using Covert Avenue and New Hyde Park Road.
