LIRR Expansion Project Executive Mark Roche and members of the Expansion Project team met with leaders from the Village of Stewart Manor to discuss the latest construction activities at the Covert Avenue Grade Crossing. Preparatory work for the Covert Avenue Grade Crossing Elimination in New Hyde Park is currently progressing. Utilities along Covert Avenue are being relocated, and several small trees are being removed to accommodate the grade crossing elimination efforts. The property at 124 Covert Avenue has already been demolished.
The Covert Avenue grade crossing will be eliminated and reconstructed to provide a two-lane grade-separated underpass with a pedestrian sidewalk on the east side of the underpass. This reconstructed grade crossing was designed in conjunction with the Village of New Hyde Park and will enhance safety and provide for a quieter and more livable community along the railroad. The project is expected to be completed by fall 2019.
