With the massive investment in LIRR mega projects such as Third Track and East Side Access that will boost the nation’s busiest commuter line’s capacity even more, a catchphrase from Tim Allen’s old show Home Improvement comes to mind – More Power! That’s what will be needed once these projects are completed and can accommodate an increase of LIRR service of nearly 50 percent.
The new Meadowbrook Substation in Freeport is an example of how MTA C&D and LIRR are working to meet the future power needs of the railroad. The substation was recently completed
and placed into service to provide electric traction power for the LIRR Babylon Branch.
This new modular 2- to 3-megawatt substation is an upgrade to the electrical infrastructure and replaces the existing 1.5- to 2-megawatt substation built in 1972, which is scheduled for demolition.
Design-Build Contractor T. Moriarty & Son, LIRR Force Account, local utilities, municipalities and the LIRR’s Department of Program Management all pulled together in this collaborative effort and completed the project on time and on budget.
Substations are integral components of the rail infrastructure system that provide power to the trains and will ultimately support future growth of the LIRR. The Meadowbrook substation replacement is part of a larger initiative to enhance service reliability and support system expansion throughout the LIRR, and ultimately support the growth and development of Long Island.
Substations in Mineola, New Cassel, New Hyde Park, and Westbury are among the more than one dozen substations that have been or will be replaced by MTA Construction & Development to increase capacity and the service reliability of the LIRR.
