On Monday, December 17, 2018, a vehicle struck the Glen Cove Road Bridge near the Carle Place Station, while a week earlier, on the 10th, a truck hit the Nassau Boulevard Bridge near the Merillon Avenue Station in Garden City. These accidents caused delays for LIRR passengers on the Ronkonkoma, Port Jefferson, and Oyster Bay Branches, as crews worked to determine the bridges were safe and structurally stable before restoring train service.
Replacements and modifications to seven rail bridges along the LIRR Expansion Project corridor will alleviate the issue of bridge strikes, reducing delays of this nature and ensuring the safety of both vehicles and LIRR passengers. Additionally, a third track will be added to these bridges, which will accommodate future capacity increases along the Main Line.
