As the LIRR Expansion Project Team continues on schedule after a spectacular 2019, LIRR crews will install new switches at Nassau interlocking this weekend, January 11-12, and again January 18-19, February 1-2, and February 8-9. This work will cause some service changes on these weekend Saturdays only. Keep reading for service details below.
Temporary track outages are needed to complete this crucial project element, which will improve reliability along the corridor. During these weekends, LIRR service will be suspended between New Hyde Park and Hicksville, thereby affecting service on multiple LIRR branches. There will be no train service at the New Hyde Park, Merillon Avenue, Mineola, Carle Place, and Westbury stations.
These operations, which will occur during daytime and overnight hours, will result in an increase in the number of personnel and equipment working along the right-of-way, as well as the use of bright lights to ensure everyone’s safety. Some of the work will also require the support of idling diesel work trains.
Thanks to the LIRR Forward Plan, the LIRR has upgraded 23 switches, including the recently replaced Nassau Switch. Nassau Switch is one of the most highly trafficked areas with over 200 train traverses every day. These switch upgrades, among many other initiatives, have resulted in 43% fewer cancellations, 22% fewer short trains and 30% fewer trains delayed over 15 minutes.
