Construction on a new Merillon Avenue station has begun with the removal of the western halves of the platforms and the ongoing installation of columns to support the new station platform at the northwest portion of the station. Once the western halves are rebuilt, the eastern halves will be removed and rebuilt as well. The new platforms will accommodate 12-car trains, instead of limited to the 10-car train lengths today.
Other station improvements will include: platform canopies; new platform furnishings and accoutrements including benches, shelters, and signage; CCTV security cameras to improve safety; ADA-compliant mobility improvements including elevators and ramps; free public Wi-Fi; USB charging stations and digital information displays. New bike racks and art will also be installed. The station is expected to be completed by summer 2020.
Adjacent to the east end of the station is the Nassau Boulevard Bridge, which will be replaced to accommodate three tracks. Work on the structure is scheduled to begin this spring and to be completed in the fall of this year.
The Merillon Avenue Station Enhancement Project will include new landscaping and vegetation features in locations with sufficient space. Plantings near the southern station platform will include native ornamental shrubbery. West of the station platform, a row of mature pine trees is being preserved throughout construction, which was a commitment made to the community during the planning process. Adjacent to these pine trees, post-construction replanting will include additional trees and shrubs of varying native species.
